2151 North Rocks

North Rocks has been my home for 25 years. I chose to live here from the intersection of three equidistant circles drawn on a Gregory’s street directory – work and parents’ homes. It is located 26 kilometres north-west of Sydney’s CBD.

Christ the King Church, North Rocks 2151
Christ the King Church. The North Rocks were a massive sandstone outcrop north of Parramatta. These rocks so dominated the landscape and were such prominent features that they gave their name to the locality but were not preserved.

Lake Parramatta Reserve. The lake is formed by a masonry dam wall formed of sandstone cut from the north rocks, North Parramatta 2151. Being the best sandstone in the district and conveniently located the rocks were mined for the construction in 1841 of the new goal at Parramatta. Further inroads were made on what was left of the rocks when a wall of masonry was erected in 1855-56 which held back the waters of Lake Parramatta. Both structures are within 2151.
Cottages, North Parramatta, 2151
Cottages, North Parramatta. A lovely sober suburban suburb with a striking range of housing architecture and many institutions such as the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children, the Kings School, Tara School for Girls, Muirfield Golf Club and places of worship.

The Kings School. This series of photographs are screen shots taken as I ‘drove’ through 2151 using Google Street View. All photos were then processed on my iPad to emulate the architecture in Walker Evans’ “American Photographs” showing not only the extent of change that photography has undergone over the last 80 years but how we still love the early masters.
