Tallong is plop in the middle of postcode 2579, which encompasses 8 small towns of the Southern Highlands in NSW. Home to the oldest surviving single teacher school in Australia, Tallong has a population of approximately 700. Morning fogs can linger ’til lunch and long wet grass lines quiet roads. Hobby farms and apple orchards occupy the fringes of the town and single general store acts as community centre and library. Late at night, garbage trains rattle through, carrying waste from Sydney to landfill near Goulburn.
